At Chickahominy Falls in Hanover County Virginia, the cooking club is off to a fast start! And why not with Woodside Farms, a 10 acre-professionally managed farm, at the heart and soul of the community. Residents with a keen interest in cooking and healthy living have come together to not only fine tune their talents and share best practices but to spread the love of healthy eating with others in their community.
The cooking club meets monthly in the barn at Chickahominy Falls to plan and share their love of cooking. Recently, the club met to enjoy an evening of cajun and creole cuisine. One of their members provided a cajun cooking demonstration followed by dining for all to enjoy. This fall the club has a full schedule. They plan to help provide cooking demonstrations at the Woodside Farms Farmstands to help residents learn various ways to eat farm fresh foods. They are also planning “Muffin Tin Madness Exchange”, inspired by a recent AARP article, where everyone will bring a batch of your favorite savory or sweet creations to share. Followed by Friends-giving for November and in December a Holiday Gift basket exchange for the entire community of Chickahominy Falls to enjoy. Everyone will be able to share in the joy of giving sharing dressings, sauces, chutneys, seasoning mixes or anything that is your specialty to the trade.
When Hanover Tomato season was at it’s peak and there was an abundance of those beautiful red delicious fruits from the farm – Chickahominy Falls cooking club met at the barn kitchen to process over 50 lbs. of tomatoes into delicious canned stewed tomatoes for enjoyment year round of this seasonal delicacy. When this club comes together, mighty tasks are made into fast work. Producing a large number of jarred stewed tomatoes, each club member was able to take a jar home to enjoy. The remainder are being sold at the Woodside Farms Farmstands. This is the perfect example of how one small group in the community shares their love with everyone, creating wellness for all to enjoy.
“We have a great group of neighbors who enjoy learning and sharing. Having the farm, barn and kitchen are an ideal setting for a club like ours.” – Peter H., Chickahominy Falls Resident
